Shortened my tracks yesterday with the help of an ugly Snow Master owner. Either the previous owner cut them way too long or they've stretched with use. With the track tensioners fully extended, the tracks were just about tight enough. That was not good enough. We cut about 6" off each side and re-installed them. The track couplers are Flexco Model 550 Bolt Hinge Fasteners http://www.flexco.com/products/flexco_bolt_hinged

Marking belt to drill new holes for the bolt hinge fasteners, clamping a fastener in place, using a track jack to pull the halves of the belt together, and re-inserting the bolts.

It seems that Penetrol was suppose to be just a paint additive/thinner, but someone discovered it does an excellent job of restoring faded fiberglass color.

Nice pictures!

What would you say is the overall condition of the tracks? The rubber looks pretty good, but the 2 belt design is not going to give you the side hill stability of the 4 track design. Adding a steel cross grouser will help, but also increase the weight of the unit.

Thanks for posting about the Penetrol, it was mentioned here, but the other poster never came back to finish the thread.

You are correct, the rubber is good. I don't currently have the time to re-do them and actually have, of all things, a Snow Master owner working on it for me while I'm on the road. Next year I hope to have the time to strip it down and do the tracks correctly. Another Kristi owner is experimenting with HDPE in place of the wood. I may go that way, depending on his results.

I heard Allen Hudson purchased HDPE and ripped it to length. When you rip cut HDPE, it tends to loose a lot of rigidity. I hope it works out well for him, we discussed this in 2006:
http://ubb.kristisnowcat.com/ultimatebb.php?/topic/6/1#000001

Extruded UHMW PE would be a better choice as a replacement for the factory hickory cleat. Hickory was used for its strength, not oak. How many oak MLB baseball bats do you see out there?

My Dad and I have discussed having some UHMW PE extruded in the correct trapezoidal cleat dimensions. We have not gone out for quotes; it would probably need to be manufactured in China to keep costs low.

Allen was the guy I was talking about. I am waiting to see how it works out for him. Meanwhile, I have to throw out hundreds of pounds of HDPE every month at work. I know it melts down and reforms easily. If it works out for Allen, I may make a mold and 'cast' my own.
